Response to Stanford eliminating 11 sports
Terry Norvelle-Unfortunately these recent athletic budget cuts that have been in the news is just the start. As I like to say, the "other side of the campus" will also need to slash expenses ESPECIALLY if there is no football money coming in if the season is cancelled. A lot of people are not aware that many: libraries, labs, admin buildings, computers, student unions, microscopes, etc are paid in part by athletic revenues. AND with no games on television, a MAJOR 4 hour student recruiting infomercial hurts general enrollment. Many studies have been done over the years that report a direct correlation to expanded student enrollment to sports television coverage. Finally, we cant forget the massive cash payout ($900 million in revenue) to these universities that was wiped out with the cancellation of this years March Madness.
